Fertility

Dr. Shaba is not a fertility specialist but can help start the process and do some initial testing before heading down the path of seeing a fertility specialist. From a male fertility standpoint, we are usually talking about sperm counts and quality of sperm. The best way to evaluate this is with a complete semen analysis. We will order 2 of these so we can compare the values and make sure the abnormal test wasn’t a false test. In addition to this Dr. Shaba will usually order a scrotal ultrasound to rule out varicocele, which is the #1 fixable cause of male infertility- and can be done by Dr. Shaba as a minor outpatient surgery.

Ways to help sperm quality:

  • Avoid hot bath or jacuzzi- heat to the testicles inhibits sperm production and quality
  • Wear looser underwear
  • Avoid trauma, radiation or surgery to the pelvis
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs, especially marijuana
  • Do not take testosterone

It is advised to try unprotected sex for at least 6 months before seeking treatment. Tracking ovulation and making sure your partner has been off birth control for a few months before can help as well. A male workup is worth it if you are unsuccessful. It can be straight forward and easier than a female workup, even though most of the time in infertility the issue is on the female side. Dr. Shaba is happy to help and if you need a male or female fertility specialist, he can advise you on who to choose as well. Dr. Shaba and his wife have gone thru fertility treatments, so he has a wealth of personal experience to help guide you thru your journey.
